
Led by Shooka Afshar, a Harvard Music Award-winning opera singer, composer, and music educator, who graduated from Longy School of Music of Bard College, her mixed media music performances the challenges women go through in their quest to succeed. Additionally, Shooka Afshar offers frequent insightful and dynamic vocal pedagogy workshops.
Shooka Afshar is currently developing a new mixed media performance that is set to take the stage in about a year. This upcoming project, titled The Internal Family, delves into the internal psychological struggles of women as they navigate societal expectations. While the main character is portrayed as a woman, the narrative aims to highlight universal human experiences, revealing that such internal battles impact individuals of all genders. Through the use of satire, Shooka Afshar performances bring these inner conflicts to life with actors who embody various aspects of the psyche, including insecurity and fear, emphasizing how these elements can impede personal growth.
Furthermore, this work thoughtfully incorporates LGBTQ+ characters, addressing themes of discrimination and the bravery required to reveal one’s true self. To convey these intricate themes, The Internal Family utilizes innovative Plastique Animée techniques set to music projects like Hungarian Rhapsody No. 14 by Liszt and Vivaldi’s Winter, creating a harmonious relationship between movement and music that enhances the emotional resonance of the performance. Additionally, Shooka Afshar plans to hold a vocal pedagogy workshop to further explore the intersection of voice and performance in this compelling narrative.
